Im Oktober 2010 verkündete Ubuntu-Hersteller Canonical, dass man die GNOME Shell mit der Eigenentwicklung Unity in Ubuntu 11.04 ersetzen möchte. Das erregte einiges Aufsehen und wurde nicht überall gut angenommen. Das Unity-Original, wie es in Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat” enthalten ist, verlangt 3D-Beschleunigung und benutzt Compiz als Compositing-Fenster-Manager. Sollte ein Rechner nicht die erforderlichen Anforderungen erfüllen, fiel Ubuntu bisher auf einen traditionellen GNOME zurück und setzte diesen ein. Nun plant Canonical offenbar eine 2D-Version von Unity für solche Szenarios.
“Unity 2D” wird eine Unity-Umgebung mit sich bringen, ohne OpenGL oder andere beschleunigte Grafiktreiber zu brauchen. Es benutzt Qt und QML. Ziel ist es, mit der 2D-Variante so nah wie möglich an das Aussehen und Verhalten der 3D-Version heran zu kommen. Dies zielt speziell auf die ganzen ARM-basierten mobilen Geräte, die keine OpenGL-Treiber haben.
Unity und Unity 2D wird mit Ubuntu 11.04 “Natty Narwhal” im April 2011 ausgeliefert. Ebenso ist eine Launchpad-Seite für das Projekt erhältlich.
