Die Frage nach dem Sinn einer Ubuntu-Portierung auf die Architekturen Intel IA64 und Sun SPARC ist bereits seit einigen Monaten im Äther. Wenn sich keiner bereit erklären wird, diese Ports zu warten, seien diese dem Untergang geweiht. Offensichtlich hat sich niemand gefunden, und die beiden Ports werden eingestellt. Die IA64- und SPARC-Ausgaben sind auch weit weniger populär als die Ausgaben für x86 und x86_64.
Die Ablauffrist für einen Freiwilligen lief mit dem Feature-Freeze für Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat ab, der letzte Woche war. Somit ist das Schicksal der SPARC- und IA64-Verseionen besiegelt und es wird keine Unterstützung für die beiden Architekturen im Maverick-Kernel geben.
