Ubuntu 13.04 könnte XZ statt Gzip bei den Paketen verwenden

Auf dem Ubuntu Developer Summit ist für den 31. Oktober ein Meeting geplant, das sich mit dem Kompressions-Verfahren in künftigen Ubuntu-Versionen befasst. Da steht kruz und knackig: Fedora verwendet es. Wird dei Archivgrößen signifikant verkleinern. Wird auch Debian bei der Entscheidung für Squeeze+1 helfen. Dpkg unterstützt es bereits. Wenn es akzeptiert wird,, braucht man einen Backport bis Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04), um Upgrades sicherzustellen.
XZ braucht länger beim Einpacken von Dateien. Allerdings ist die Kompression signifikant besser als mit Gzip. Der Anwender würde aber davon wenig merken, weil beim Auspacken gibt es nur marginale Unterschiede. Ein wünschenswerter Schritt, denn somit würden auch die Online-Updates kleiner. Bei Debian spielt man seit der diesjährigen DebConf auch mit dem Gedanken, auf XZ umzusteigen.
