Sam Spilsbury ist dafür bekannt, bei Canonical Compiz-Hacker gewesen zu sein. Anfang Februar 2013 hat er bereits eine Proof of Concept veröffentlicht, dass das XBMC Media Center auf Weston läuft. Erschreibt in seinem Blog, dass es sich damals um einen Hack gehandelt hat. Dieser benutzte Waylands Unterstützung für SDL und er hat ein wenig an XBMC geschraubt.
XBMC will allerdings weg von SDL und das Window-System direkt ansteuern. Somit musste smspillaz seinen Hack komplett umschreiben. Im Rahmen des Google Summer of Code hat er diese Aufgabe in Angriff genommen.
Spilsbury hat nun einen Pull Request für eine anfängliche Version veröffentlicht. Er hofft, dass Anwender diesen nutzen können und will bis zum Ende des GSoC noch weitere Verbesserungen einbringen.
