Linus Torvalds hat seinen Gedanken Taten folgen lassen und den neuesten Release-Kandidaten des Kernel einfach 3.0.0-rc1 genannt. Auf lkml.org begründet er, dass er das einfach so entschieden habe und sich die nächste Ausgabe des Linux-Kernel mit dem 20-jährigen Jubiläum decke. Große Änderungen gibt es laut eigener Aussage nicht einmal. Allerdings will Torvalds nicht mehr höher als 40 bei der 2.6.x-Serie zählen.
In sechs bis sieben Wochen, wenn die Testphase vorüber ist und alle Ungereimtheiten ausgemerzt sind, wird der neueste Linux-Kernel ganz einfach 3.0 heißen. In seiner Ankündigung weist Torvalds noch einmal darauf hin, dass es keine magischen Änderungen geben wird. Einige Treiber-Updates, ansonsten Business as usual. Er ist der Chef, muss man wohl einfach so akzeptieren.
