Das Betriebssystem basiert auf Debians Testing-Zweig. Finnix ist die 17. Ausgabe der Linux-Distribution, die vor über zehn Jahren das erste Mal das Licht der Welt erblickte. neu an dieser Version ist, dass es wieder Unterstützung für die PowerPC-Architektur gibt. Die Distribution hat wenig an ihrer Fassade geändert. Allerdings wurde der Kern gründlich überarbeitet. Als Kernel bringt Finnix 101 2.6.36 mit sich. Darüber hinaus wurde dem Betriebssystem ein Hardware-Erkennungs-Tool spendiert.

Finnix enthält keine grafisch Oberfläche und ist damit sicher nicht jedermanns Geschmack. Systemadministratoren finden aber viele nützliche Tools und dürften sich über die schnelle Startzeit freuen. Viele der Änderungen wurden laut eigener Aussage getätigt, um die Entwicklung und das Remastern einfacher zu gestalten.
