Letztes Aufbäumen? Nun will MPEG-LA anscheinend doch gegen VP8/WebM vorgehen

Es ist ja schon lange bekannt, dass die MPEG-LA dem freien Video-Codec Theora haltlose Patent-Drohungen hinterherwirft. Nun will man sich wohl auch gegen den VP8-Codec, der durch das WebM-Projekt definiert wird, wappnen. Man könnte es auch so ausdrücken, dass man langsam seine Felle davonschwimmen sieht und viele Hersteller lieber einen freien Codec einsetzen. Firefox, Opera und auch Chrome sind frei vom MPEG-LA entwickelter Software. Irgendwelche gültigen Patent-Verletzungen hat man aber anscheinend noch gar nicht. Deswegen ruft man auf, einen Pakt mit dem Teufel einzugehen. Leute die meinen VP8 verletzt eines ihrer Patente, können das melden. Das riecht ja schon verdächtig nach Verzweiflungstat. MPEG, also nicht MPEG-LA, hat übrigens angekündigt, einen Codec frei von Gebühren zu entwickeln.
Die MPEG-LA dachte sich wohl, da bringen wir den H.264-Codec erst mal unter die Leute und dann verlangen wir kräftig Gebühren, wenn keiner so schnell umstellen kann. Blöd gelaufen … Na dann hoffentlich bald “Tschüss MPEG-LA”. Wer würde weinen, wenn ein weiterer Patent-Troll weg ist? Unterstützer für ein freies Web sicher nicht.
