Generalüberholung für KDEs Plasma: Soll mehr OpenGL nutzen

Es ist ja hinlänglich bekannt, dass die KDE Software Compilation 4.7 möglicherweise OpenGL 3.0 im KWin Compositing Manager unterstützen wird. Und genau das planen die Entwickler für Plasma anscheinend auch. Aaron Seigo hat einen längeren Blog-Eintrag veröffentlicht, was für Plasma in der Zukunft geplant ist. Dafür müsste die Software-Komponente allerdings gründlich überarbeitet werden. Der Mehrwert von einer OpenGL-Nutzung ist ganz klar die Hardware-Beschleunigung.
Die ganze Arbeit würde in einer neuen Bibliothek enden (libplasma2), die inkompatibel mit der derzeitigen Plasma-Bibliothek ist und von KDE SC 4.x genutzt wird. Man müsste fast alles auf QML portieren. Darf man gespannt sein, was daraus wird.
